International Journal Paper Submission Workshop(Prof. Chia-Yen (Chad) Chiu)
The Center for Strategy and Human Capital Rearch and the Institute of Human Resource Management at National Sun Yat-sen University are pleased to invite Prof. Chia-Yen (Chad) Chiu (Reader/Associate Professor in Leadership, University of Adelaide, ranked #74 globally by U.S. News), currently serving as Associate Editor of Human Relations (an FT50 journal and a Tier 1 journal in the Management category of Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council), to host a workshop on submitting papers to international journals at our university on Thursday, December 21, 2023.
Professor Chiu serves as the Associate Editor of Human Relations and is also a member of the editorial boards of top-tier journals such as the Journal of Management and the Journal of Organizational Behavior. His primary research areas focus on positive leadership and managerial mental health issues. He has published his work in prestigious journals, including Human Relations, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and The Leadership Quarterly.
On the day of the event, two workshop sessions were conducted, with a total of 28 academic peers from National Sun Yat-sen University, National Cheng Kung University, and even abroad participating and engaging in discussions.
First session- Key insights
In the first session, Prof. Chia-Yen (Chad) Chiu shared valuable insights. He not only introduced the key considerations and preferred topics for Human Relations submissions but also highlighted six common reasons for manuscript rejection. The session featured interactive discussions, where attendees shared their experiences of rejection, and Chad provided feedback from the perspective of an Associate Editor (AE). This rare opportunity allowed participants to explore the potential reasons behind editorial decisions, such as:
- Why the review process aims to reach a final decision within two rounds of revisions.
- The real considerations behind an AE’s request for additional data collection.
- Why a desk rejection might actually be the most beneficial form of rejection for authors.
The nearly two-hour interactive session offered valuable perspectives and tacit knowledge to both faculty and students, equipping them with practical insights for future manuscript submissions.
Second session-PDW
The second session was a Paper Development Workshop, where five doctoral students from the institute—Candice, Sheng-Bin, Ruo-Yun, Yan-Ru, and Maya—submitted their manuscripts to participate. Each student was given approximately five minutes to briefly introduce their research framework, hypotheses, and results, followed by feedback from Prof. Chad Chiu.Chad frequently posed critical questions that highlighted common blind spots in academic writing, such as:
“Who is the primary audience for this paper?”
“What unique insights can you offer them?”
“How will their perspectives change after reading your work?”
These questions underscored the importance of tailoring the writing to the intended audience and the need to adjust the framing of the paper based on the target journal. Over the two-hour session, Chad provided detailed feedback and constructive critiques, addressing the nuances of writing for different journals and audiences.
The session offered participants valuable lessons on refining their manuscripts, honing their writing strategies, and enhancing the impact of their research. It was a highly enriching experience, equipping attendees with practical skills for academic publishing.
